The civil war which lasted sixteen years (1977-1992) is the principal cause of the placement of mines on the Mozambican territory. Throughout this war, which began after the country's independence, more than one million Mozambican civilians died due to fatal confrontations and the presence of immense minefields. Desertification is the gradual degradation of fertile soils in arid and semi-arid zones of the planet. Now, humans and their activities are the principal cause of this process. Impoverished people living in rural areas of developing countries are the most vulnerable and most seriously affected.
