Alouette

As part of the series Chants populaires, Norman McLaren creates the illusion of movement to illustrate the folk song "M'en revenant de la joli'Rochelle" by using a travelling zoom that follows the cut-out of a canoe's bow as it moves over a painted backdrop.

After a long sketching session spent capturing the movements of these odd creatures, McLaren made this film of a chicken's dance by drawing directly on film stock. Hen Hop drew great praise from Pablo Picasso.
