Like a dream in the morning mist, a mighty ox emerges from the rain-soaked earth dragging the remnants of an old cart. A prisoner of its yoke, the great beast pulls its heavy load, which carries within it a greedy and angry nation of people-a hungry parasite that saps its energy and consumes its body and soul. An allegory of mankind heading for disaster, Bydlo is a tragic vision inspired by the fourth movement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Drawing on the composer's brilliant ability to evoke work and labour in his music, Patrick Bouchard brings the earth to life through animated clay sculptures, creating a concrete and terrifying world, a tactile nightmare in which man is his own slave driver.

Bydlo

Comme un songe dans la brume du petit matin, une bête puissante surgit de la terre fertilisée par la pluie, faisant bientôt revivre les vestiges d'une charrette. Prisonnier de son joug, le bœuf colossal tire son lourd fardeau, entraînant avec lui une peuplade avide et querelleuse, cohorte insatiable avec laquelle il fait corps et qui cannibalise ses ressources jusqu'à les épuiser... Allégorie d'une humanité courant à sa perte, Bydlo est une vision tragique inspirée par la musique du quatrième des Tableaux d'une exposition de Moussorgski. S'appuyant sur la magistrale capacité du compositeur à évoquer le travail et l'effort par les seuls moyens de la musique, Patrick Bouchard sculpte de ses mains la matière brute pour animer la terre et en faire émerger un monde concret et terrifiant, un cauchemar tactile où l'Homme est son propre bourreau.

Here and the Great Elsewhere

Lost in a reverie, a man reels with sudden, piercing awareness of his own state of being. He ponders the world in which he lives-from the evolution of life and the atomic particles that constitute matter, to the mystery of memory and the enigma of death. Bounded by a walled enclosure, he is both unique and no different than anyone else who has searched in vain for the key to the great beyond. Through four tableaux that explore her character's thoughts, filmmaker Michèle Lemieux takes a mischievous look at the profound reflections of this everyman, whose questions are part of humanity's eternal quest for meaning. An abstract yet compelling philosophical tale, Here and the Great Elsewhere turns the Alexeïeff-Parker pinscreen into a metaphor for the particles that make up the universe.

Batmilk

Amidst a magical journey, an oafish ghoul and his soft exposed brain are met with ruin when the brain is unexpectedly killed. Though paralyzed, the ghoul attains a fresh brain and is fed with new life. An unassuming yet unsettling story of death and rebirth. This animated short was made for Hothouse 5, the NFB's program for emerging filmmakers, whose central theme was "The Time I Changed My Mind".
