In this Montreal neighbourhood, everyone calls on Oumar when they need a hand. Now a Canadian citizen, Oumar is from Burkina Faso, and he finds helping others only natural. Working as a mechanic, Oumar has become a vital, central part of his community. People tend to gather round as he works, and talk often turns to weighty issues: feminism, polygamy, politics, religion. In eight months' time, he is due to return for a visit with his family after six years away, so he is searching for hundreds of presents to take with him. Back home, when you leave the nest, it's to look for wealth. Otherwise, failure awaits. This is Oumar's lot as the custodian of dreams that he has become.

Dans huit mois, le grand frère ira visiter sa famille après six ans d'absence et c'est pour cette raison qu'il cherche des centaines de cadeaux. Chez lui, quand on quitte les siens, c'est pour trouver la richesse. Sinon, c'est l'échec. C'est le lot du porteur de rêves qu'il est devenu.

In the Name of the Mother and the Son

In the Name of the Mother and the Son paints a portrait of life in the Montreal neighbourhood of Saint-Michel for two youths of Haitian origin, whom we follow in their quest for hope and freedom. Not unlike their parents, who had to start from scratch on arriving in Canada, James and Le Voyou both yearn to take wing, each in his own way. The film is a cri de coeur to the women of Haiti who, like the mothers of these two young men, sacrificed so much to give their children a better future. In the name of the mother and the son is also a sensitive account that eloquently decries the prejudice that, even today, plagues young Quebecers of Haitian origin. In French with English subtitles.

Ted Baryluk's Grocery

Ukrainian-Canadian Ted Baryluk's grocery store has been a fixture in Winnipeg's north end for over twenty years. In this photo study, Ted talks about his store, the customers who have come and gone, and the social changes his multicultural neighbourhood has seen. But most of all he wonders what will become of his store after he retires. He hopes his daughter, Helen, will take over, but she wants to move away. The film is a wistful rendering of a shopkeeper's relationship with his daughter and a fascinating portrait of a neighbourhood and its inhabitants.
